VITUS "979" 1988

50cm center/center – Shimano 600

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

I am a big fan of these Vitus frames. This only once in advance.

Vitus "979" with Shimano 600 group, small 50cm frame.

Vitus is a French bicycle manufacturer whose headquarters are located near St. Etienne. You can probably call Vitus one of the most innovative France in the field of frame building. Vitus was one of the first manufacturers of aluminum frames, along with Alan from Italy. Mass production began at Vitus in 1975, when almost all frames used in cycling were made of steel. Vitus simply wanted to bring lighter frames or complete wheels to the market by using aluminum as a material. They collaborated with the French aerospace company TVT. The first frames were distributed through the French manufacturer Mercier. Only later, as the company grew, did they distribute the frames themselves. The three main tubes of each Vitus frame are almost always anodized in color and glued into aluminum sleeves. The big advantage of these classic frames is clearly the weight. The aluminum-magnesium alloy used, which Vitus calls "Duralinox", made the frames 30 percent lighter than the best and lightest steel frames. It was already possible to build bikes under 8kg in the eighties! Vitus was also already in 1982 one of the first manufacturers who brought the material carbon into the bicycle industry. Here, too, they cooperated with French aircraft manufacturers who were already using the material.

The most famous rider and brand ambassador was certainly
the great Sean Kelly, who took great victories on Vitus racers.

The bike shown here is a 979 from the late eighties in the rare color black. Especially in this small frame size, the weight of the bike is quite amazing. Considering that the bike is just under 35 years old, this is hard to believe. The wheel is built with a Shimano 600 group, except for the rear derailleur, here comes one from the top group of Dura Ace to 'use. The Mavic MA40 rims are for "normal" - no glued tires. The 3ttt cockpit is narrow, so perfect for smaller riders.

Perfect bikel also for the L' Eroica, if you do not want to go with the absolutely perfect collector's item.
