Sensational Raleigh / Cyfac "Team Castorama" in Reynolds 753 with C-Record Group for Robert Martin
This Raleigh racing bike represents a special moment in the transition from classic steel racing bikes to the modern professional cycling world of the early 1990s. It is a bike that not only carries a prestigious brand name but also embodies remarkable technical and sporting history. The Team Castorama frames were built by Cyfac in France, a workshop renowned at the time for its exceptional precision in the professional field and supplying numerous top teams.
The uniqueness of this frame lies in its Reynolds 753 tubing. This heat-treated steel was considered one of the most exclusive and high-performance materials of its time and could only be worked by specially certified frame builders. Reynolds 753 allowed for extremely thin-walled tubes while maintaining high stiffness and low weight. The result is a frame that offers a remarkable combination of directness, stability, and lively ride quality, still regarded today as one of the pinnacles of classic steel frame construction.
The bike is equipped with an almost complete Campagnolo C-Record group, including the legendary Delta brakes. These brakes stand, like few other components, for Campagnolo's technical ambition and design boldness of the era. Their distinctive design language, combined with high-quality mechanics, makes them an iconic element of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Combined with the C-Record group, the bike presents a coherent overall impression of elegance, functionality, and technical sophistication, representing the state of the art in professional cycling at the time.
This Raleigh was ridden in 1990/91 by Team Castorama, one of the leading French professional teams of that era. The team featured well-known riders such as Laurent Fignon, Thierry Marie, and Charly Mottet, who regularly competed in major stage races and classics. Castorama was known for professionally organized racing, technical openness, and close collaboration with manufacturers. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the team achieved numerous stage wins at the Tour de France, strong overall placements in major tours, as well as successes in French stage races and classics.
Raleigh benefited from Cyfac's expertise and a relentless focus on performance and reliability. The bikes were consistently designed for race use and proved themselves under the toughest conditions of professional racing.
The bike presented here is a small mystery. The frame was built for Robert Martin, yet Robert Martin does not appear in any official team lists from those years. One might think that Robert Martin's name was simply applied as a decal on the top tube—but that is not the case. Both the frame and fork clearly show his initials. The build also features a few peculiarities: the then rather rare C-Record crankset is fitted in 180 mm length, and instead of the standard C-Record shifters, Simplex Retrofriction components were used. The geometry of the frame also suggests a custom-made frame for the team. Anyone with additional information is welcome to contact me.
For today's collectors, this bike is especially appealing because it combines multiple worlds. It carries the prestigious Raleigh name, was built in one of Europe's finest frame workshops, consists of one of the most exclusive steel tubing sets of its time, and is equipped with one of the most iconic groups Campagnolo has ever produced. At the same time, it is closely connected to professional racing and is not merely a showpiece.
Owning such a Raleigh in your collection means possessing an authentic piece of racing history. It represents the last great flowering of high-end steel frames in professional cycling.
Personally, I love bikes like this with history and team connections. The beautiful pearlescent white color, combined with the C-Record group and Reynolds 753 in absolutely authentic condition, plus the original Castorama jersey, make this bike a true collector's item.
