Quite possibly one of the most beautiful bikes I have ever owned – De Rosa "Primato" Columbus EL – Shimano Dura Ace – 58 cm
De Rosa is one of the most renowned names in classic Italian road bike building. The company was founded in 1953 by Ugo De Rosa in Milan. Early on, De Rosa established a reputation as a frame builder for professional riders and worked with legends such as Eddy Merckx. To this day, the brand stands for Italian craftsmanship, elegant lines, and an uncompromising focus on racing performance and quality.
The De Rosa Primato presented here from 1993 is a characteristic representative of this tradition and a particularly interesting example of the early 1990s for bicycle collectors. The frame is built from Columbus EL steel tubing, one of the highest-quality and lightest tube sets of its time. The precisely crafted chrome lugs and the elegant silver metallic paint give the bike a restrained, classic elegance that is typical of high-end Italian frame building of this era. Pure understatement. A technical highlight of these Primato frames is the reinforced bottom bracket shell. It increases stiffness in the central power-transfer area and shows how consistently De Rosa prioritized performance and durability, even in a slender steel frame. These construction details are what set the Primato apart from many contemporary frames, both visually and technically.
The complete Shimano Dura-Ace group represents the top racing standard of its day. Its precise mechanics and high-quality finish harmonize perfectly with the sophisticated frame. The group, featuring the elegant 7410 crankset, is in absolutely excellent condition. The setup is complemented by a Mavic Ceramic wheelset with ceramic-coated rims, known for their outstanding braking performance and durability, which also add a distinctive visual accent to the bike, especially in combination with the Specialized Turbo tires.
Particularly noteworthy is the exceptional state of preservation of this example. The paint, chrome, and components present themselves in remarkably well-kept condition and convey an authentic impression of how a high-quality racing bicycle of that period originally appeared. For collectors, the bike is therefore less a mere display piece than a carefully preserved piece of cycling history that vividly documents the qualities of classic steel frames. Even today, this racing machine can still be ridden in a sporty manner, but it can just as easily be regarded as a work of art and appreciated for the beauty of a bicycle.
