CRATONI "SARAGOSSA" 1993

57cm center/center – Campagnolo Chorus

Cratoni Saragossa Columbus Multishape Campagnolo Chorus 11 Fach Carbon - Neoklassiker -  RH57cm

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

Cratoni Saragossa Columbus Multishape Campagnolo Chorus 11 speed Carbon - Neoclassic - RH57cm

This Cratoni Saragossa MS was not very nicely painted and so had no basis for me to get this classic "original".
Cratoni is a small family business (Krauter - Cratoni) in Rudersberg near Stuttgart, which built very high quality racing bikes in the eighties and early nineties. After the advent of production lines in the Far East and the switch of many manufacturers to aluminium, Cratoni moved into the helmet business. The company is still active there today.
The Columbus MultiShape tube set, from which this frame would be made, came on the market in the late eighties.
Columbus MS (multi-shape) frames are characterised by tubes with different diameters and shapes. Each tube has been designed in collaboration with "Gilco Design" to best withstand the stresses to which it is subjected. The tube set comes from the Cyclex alloy family, which also includes Columbus SL, SLX and TSX, for example. Each tube has a different shape and diameter to maximise stiffness without increasing weight. The frame has been professionally repainted. The colour is a very nice metallic paint.

The frame has a teardrop shaped down tube and the left chainstay is triangular while the right one is oval. Furthermore, a special bottom bracket sleeve is used to join the different tube cross-sections.
The frame has a chromed rear triangle with perforated Campa dropouts front and rear and a Cratoni engraving on the seatstay tips. The chromed fork also has a Cratoni engraving and the fork crown is very tight and aerodynamic.

Since I have built myself a steel frame with a modern groupset and am very happy with this Neoretro bike, I decided to build such a "hybrid" from this Cratoni. I used a new Campagnolo Chorus 11-speed carbon groupset that runs perfectly.

For me, the Campagnolo Ergopower shift and brake levers are the most comfortable of the three big component manufacturers in terms of ergonomics.

The wheelset was rebuilt and fitted with the best Wolfpack tyres. This bike is still suitable today as a "real" racing bike, with which you can ride fast without sitting on a uniformly black, modern "one-size-fits-all" bike.
