GERMAN CRAFTSMANSHIP AND JAPANESE PERFECTION
Hans Mittendorf built frames for racing and touring bikes and tandems from 1972 to 2002. Already during his career as a cyclist, he became interested in the technical aspects of frame construction and drew one conclusion above all for the production of his bikes: Only the meticulous examination of the cyclist's optimal seating position creates the perfect basis for optimal performance! He consistently held this view and thus created the basis for his legendary brand. Mittendorf bikes are rare and sought-after because they were never mass-produced, never available in standard sizes - in other words, they were never available off the shelf! Back then, anyone who wanted to buy a Mittendorf bike had to travel to Herrstein on the Nahe and was measured there by master Mittendorf. Delivery times were long, prices high and so Mittendorfs were already rarities and jewels back then. The frames from Mittendorf's workshop were admired by "consumption-oriented" cyclists, who also had to lament the one or other damage after the race weekend, but they were not very common in sports circles. So his name is rightly a legend and with his work he stands in the tradition of German frame building alongside the brands Lauer and Lüders, Rickert, Paupitz and others.
This offered bike was put on the road in the early 80s. The frame is made of legendary 531 Reynolds tubing. The most remarkable detail of this frame is the cranked dropout, patented under the name of the frame builder, which, when used on the left side, made it possible to centre the spokes in the rear wheel. This is not only a visual delight, but also distributes the forces in the rear wheel symmetrically, which solves a core problem in wheel construction. Many beautiful details of workmanship distinguish the frame. Chrome-plated parts and the silver headset badge with the heraldic coat of arms of the Mittendorf family make the frame a gem. The paintwork was renewed to a high standard of workmanship by Velociao in Berlin.
The components on this small frame come from Shimano. With the exception of the front derailleur, they are components from the Dura-Ace AX group, components that were sensational at the time of their release, both in terms of function and design. The ingenious parts, perfectly manufactured in the Japanese way, are delicate and very shapely. Above all, this group is the first component group to be consistently designed with aerodynamic aspects in mind.
The picture-perfect and richly detailed frame and the special components form an exciting and interesting contrast on this bike.
